College Football Injuries to Modern Recovery Science

My final year of college football would ultimately become one of the most important years of my life.

At the time, I didn’t realize it, but it would set me on a path of personal investigation, self-discovery, and a lifelong fascination with human movement, anatomy, and recovery.

That season was particularly exciting because the university had brought in a new strength and conditioning staff. The previous year, the team had come painfully close to winning the championship, losing on a last-minute play that defined the season.

The new coaches brought something I had never experienced before: power training.

Up until then, most of my understanding of strength revolved around lifting weights in the gym. These coaches had a different perspective. Interestingly, they were also involved in training one of Mexico’s fastest runners at the time, an athlete who would eventually compete in the Olympics and earn a silver medal.

What surprised me most was that much of our training wasn’t happening in the weight room.

Instead, we spent hours outside on the field jumping, sprinting, bounding, hurdling, and performing athletic movement drills.

To me, it was a revelation.

The weight room often felt rigid and stationary. This training felt alive.

As the weeks went on, I found myself constantly asking questions.

Why were we doing these jumps?

Why were we bounding across the field?

Why were mobility and coordination so important?

The coaches explained concepts related to power production, athletic development, movement efficiency, and force transfer. Much of the terminology was new to me, but one lesson became crystal clear:

To become a better athlete, I needed more than strength.

I needed mobility.

I needed flexibility.

I needed coordination.

I needed movement.

Perhaps most importantly, I noticed something unexpected.

The more I focused on moving well, the less low back pain I experienced.

Unfortunately, my body had one more lesson to teach me.

During practice one day, I felt a sudden sharp sensation in my hamstring. It felt as though the muscle had torn apart.

I was immediately sent to the training room, where I spent weeks receiving treatment. Day after day, the therapists worked on my leg and used various recovery techniques available at the time.

One of the physicians eventually discovered a small bulge in my lower back.

His conclusion was something I already suspected but didn’t want to accept.

The hamstring problem wasn’t really a hamstring problem.

It was likely coming from my back.

As the season progressed, I found myself spending more time in the training room than on the football field.

Balancing rehabilitation, football, and my academic responsibilities became increasingly difficult.

Eventually, I made the difficult decision to step away from football.

At the time, it felt like an ending.

Looking back now, I realize it was actually a beginning.

I was heavier than I needed to be, carrying a significant amount of weight around my midsection. One of my closest friends suggested I visit a dietitian.

I took his advice.

Over the next three months, I followed the nutrition plan carefully and lost approximately 25 pounds.

The results surprised me.

My back wasn’t cured, but it felt significantly better.

Removing that extra weight reduced a tremendous amount of stress on my body and gave me my first glimpse into how lifestyle choices influence pain and recovery.

At my final appointment, the dietitian gave me a piece of advice that would stay with me for years.

“If you want to stay healthy, keep the weight off and learn how to stretch your back.”

The first part seemed simple enough.

The second part left me with a question.

How?

Nobody had ever really taught me.

Most people had opinions, but very few had answers.

So I began searching.

Instinctively, I dove deeper into training my abdominals and core. I became fascinated with the muscles of the trunk and their relationship to movement, stability, posture, and pain.

I wanted to understand why some people had strong cores, why some people had visible six-packs, and whether there was a deeper relationship between strength and recovery.

Around that same time, a close friend introduced me to my first Tai Chi class.

Now, Tai Chi is not stretching in the traditional sense.

But it became my first real introduction to moving with awareness.

For the first time, I experienced movement that was slow, intentional, and connected to breathing.

Every motion had purpose.

Every transition had meaning.

Every posture demanded attention.

It opened my eyes to something I had never considered before.

Recovery wasn’t only about exercises.

It wasn’t only about muscles.

It wasn’t only about strength.

The first gateway to recovery was learning to move with intention.

That realization would eventually lead me deeper into mobility, corrective exercise, rehabilitation, kettlebells, and the philosophies that would later become the foundation of the Inner Force Method.

But that is a story for another issue.

Recovery, Healing, and the Growing Conversation Around Peptides

I am always increasingly interested in understanding how the body heals.

Why do some people recover quickly while others struggle for years?

What allows tissue to repair itself?

What role do movement, nutrition, sleep, and stress play in recovery?

More recently, another topic has emerged in the health and fitness world: peptides.

Peptides are small chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. In the human body, they act as messengers, helping cells communicate and regulate important functions such as healing, growth, metabolism, hormone production, immune function, and tissue repair.

Naturally occurring peptides play a role in everything from muscle recovery after exercise to the repair of damaged tissues. Because of these functions, researchers have become increasingly interested in therapeutic peptides and their potential role in supporting recovery, performance, healthy aging, and overall well-being.

One peptide that has received significant attention recently is BPC-157.

Often referred to as the “Wolverine Peptide,” BPC-157 has developed a reputation within fitness and rehabilitation circles because of its reported ability to support the healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and other connective tissues.

Many athletes and active individuals have become interested in it as a way to potentially recover faster and return to activity sooner.

Stories from users are certainly intriguing.

Some report improvements in chronic joint pain. Others describe faster recovery from tendon injuries, muscle strains, and lingering discomfort that had resisted traditional rehabilitation efforts. Some even report an overall feeling of improved recovery, better sleep, and enhanced physical well-being.

Part of BPC-157’s appeal is that people are not generally seeking dramatic muscle growth from it. Instead, they are looking for healing.

For many, that distinction matters.

However, it is important to approach this topic with both curiosity and caution.

While the anecdotal stories are compelling, much of the excitement surrounding BPC-157 comes from personal experiences rather than large-scale human clinical research. Questions remain regarding long-term safety, effectiveness, optimal dosing, and who may or may not benefit from its use.

As someone who has spent decades pursuing recovery, movement, and better health, I find this topic fascinating—not because I believe there is a magic solution, but because it reflects a question that has guided much of my own journey:

How can we help the body heal?

My personal belief remains that the foundations of recovery are still movement, sleep, nutrition, stress management, and intelligent training. These pillars have stood the test of time.

Yet I remain curious and open-minded as science continues to explore new possibilities.

As always, the goal is not to chase shortcuts.

The goal is to better understand the remarkable healing capacity of the human body.

And that journey continues.
